Definitions for each retail type appear when you move your cursor over the coloured dots within the legends of each map. We have also provided these definitions for you below.
Indoor Mall
Any shopping centre where some or all of the shopping is available indoors only.
Power Centre
A cluster of Big Box stores. Big Box stores are large box-like buildings that usually house major retailers such as Michael's Crafts, Future Shop, Costco, Staples Business Depot etc.
Large Outdoor Mall
A shopping centre or strip mall that contains more than 20 stores or in some cases less than 20 stores but containing a major retailer. Access to stores is available per individual store via outdoor entrances only.
Small Outdoor Mall
A small shopping centre or strip mall that contains less than 20 stores. Small outdoor malls are generally neighbourhood strip malls that contain convenience stores, dry cleaners and other neighbourhood amenities.
Large Retail Cluster
A large cluster of medium to large sized individual stores that are grouped together within the same area, that are not attached to each other and are not contained within a shopping centre or mall.
Small Retail Cluster
A small cluster of individual stores that are grouped together within the same area, that are not attached to each other and are not contained within a shopping centre or mall.
Individual Retailer
Typically a larger-sized individual retailer that is not part of a retail cluster or mall.
Factory Outlet
A retail outlet that has a direct connection to the manufacturer of the product it sells.
Unique Shopping Area
Special shopping areas like Chinatown, Beaches, The Danforth, market areas, or areas with an extreme amount of retail, or famous areas such as Toronto's Yonge Street.
Restaurant Cluster
A grouping of three or more restaurants within the same area.
Entertainment Cluster
A grouping of three or more entertainment outlets. Typically contain large theatres, arcades, indoor golf, restaurants and bars.
